Ibu Sumanti Anton – Pengrajin Anyaman

Ein Dokumentarfilm über die Dayak-Flechterin Sumanti Anton in Nordkalimantan, Indonesien

Sumanti Anton lebt auf der Insel Borneo, im Dorf Long Layu in der bergigen Region des Krayan in Nordkalimantan. Sie ist verheiratet und hat 3 Söhne. Als Bäuerin und Hausfrau hat sie wenig Zeit zum Flechten, aber sie widmet jede freie Minute diesem Handwerk. Wenn sie beim Flechten die Zeit vergisst springt ihr Ehemann Armi Yudan ein, kocht und wäscht. Er ist Lehrer im Dorf.
Der Film zeigt Sumanti beim Flechten: Sie macht aus Pandanblättern ein Futter für einen traditionellen Sonnenhut und einen Boden aus Rattan für einen dekorativen Bambuskorb. Sie erzählt, wie sie das Handwerk von einer alten Frau gelernt hat. Später besuchte sie Weiterbildungskurse von kirchlichen und anderen Förderungsprogrammen. Sie erhält viele Aufträge aus dem Dorf und von diesen Institutionen. Damit kann sie zum Unterhalt der Familie beitragen und ihre grosse Küche ausstatten.
Sie sammelt Essbares im Wald und Rotanfrüchte für rote Farbe um Bambus und Rattan zu färben. In einem Workshop der Kirche wird gezeigt, wie dieses „Drachenblut“ gewonnen und angewendet wird.
Sumantis Schwiegermutter dreht Schnüre aus Pflanzenfasern, ihre Schwägerin giesst holzsparende Kochherde aus Zement und Sand. Ihr Mann und ihr Vater bauen an der Küche weiter. Sumanti besucht ihre Flechtkolleginnen im Dorf, die auch wieder begonnen haben mit natürlichen Farben und Pflanzenfasern zu flechten. Sie ist ein Vorbild für viele Frauen im Dorf. Einmal möchte sie gerne ins Ausland reisen.

A documentary film about the Dayak craftswoman Sumanti Anton in North Kalimantan, Indonesia

While working as a consultant and documentarist in North Kalimantan from 2010 to 2012 for a handicraft development program of the women's department of the native Church GKPI (Gereja Kristen Pemancar Injil) and mission21, I had multiple opportunities to interview Ibu Sumanti Anton about her life and her becoming a craftswoman.
Sumanti Anton, lives on the island of Borneo in the village Long Layu in the mountainous area of Krayan, North Kalimantan. Sumanti Anton is married with three sons. As a farmer and housewife she has little time to plait but she plaits every spare minute. She sometimes forgets to cook! Then her husband, Pak Armi Yudan, a teacher in the village, takes over with the cooking and washing.
This film shows how Sumanti plaits the lining of a traditional Raung Tamar sun hat from pandan leaves and the bottom from rattan of a Reing bamboo basket. She talks about how she started plaiting with an old woman in her village. Later, she visited training workshops organized by the church and other programs. She now has lots of orders from locals in her village, from the church, which is running a Dayak Handicraft shop in Malinau and other institutions. With the money she buys household goods and supports her family.
Sumanti harvests food plants in the forest and rattan fruits to make a red dye to paint bamboo and rattan. This is shown in a training workshop by the church. Her mother-in-law makes thin strings out of fibres. Her sister-in-law makes a stove out of clay and ash. Her husband and her father are building the kitchen. She has become a role model and her friends in the village have started to use natural dyes and natural materials once again. Sumanti dreams of going abroad one day.
